How to Sew a Halloween Witch Doll with Felt

Halloween is a celebration that we all prepare for each year to be as creative as possible. There are some people who astonish others through their talent by their disguising skills. For example, dressing like a vampire, or creating scary looks with makeup. While some celebrate the Halloween Holiday decorating house, or cooking horrific food to surprise their loved ones. If you and your child are a sewing aspirant, then this Halloween you can learn how to sew a Halloween Witch Doll with your child.

This step by step project will allow you to understand easily and your Halloween Witch shall be ready to surprise your loved ones in no time!

Step1: Take Three Color Felt to Cut out Patterns

selecting felt

You can make your Halloween Witch Doll by only using three colors of felt . We have used light skin toned felt for the face and arms, but you can choose any shade of your choice to make your witch’s skin. Moreover, we have are using and orange color for the hair to match it with the pumpkins, but your choices are unlimited! You can choose whichever color you like to give her a modern look.

As you can see in the image above, cut the felt in those different patterns to start with. If you are not good at copying pattern, then you can download and print this pattern for best results.

Once you have cut these parts, now make thin cuts on one side of the rectangular orange piece, because that’s how your broom will give a flowy look. While the other smaller rectangular shape needs thin cuts on both sides to form the hair of your Halloween witch.

Step2: Sewing and Connecting the Body and Head

Make sure you use a hand needle to stitch the eyes and mouth of your Halloween witch doll. Because sewing this tiny bit on a sewing machine may not give good results.

Once you have stitched the eyes and mouth, now its time to connect both the parts of the head with slow sewing along the sides. For a perfect circled sewing, you can use the machine manually forming 2-3 stitches at a time. Once your have sewn the face leaving the neck open from beneath, you call fill just a tiny amount of cotton or polyester in through the neck with the help of chopstick. We just need an insignificant amount of filling, because we want to give it a 3D look, and not a chubbier look!

Now that the head is ready, you can now place both the torso parts on one another and start sewing from all the three sides except for the top. Once all the three sides are sewn, you can fill in a little cotton in the torso too for a good 3D look. Make sure to fill the torso evenly for a fine shape.

Now that both head and the torso are sewn and filled a little, now its time to connect the both by inserting the neck area in the torso top. Once you have placed the both parts correctly, now you can sew over it and form a double sewing line to secure the connection of the head and the torso. Your Halloween witch doll’s torso and head should look just like the one above.

Step3: Preparing the Broom and Hair

Now comes the easiest but the most prominent part making of your Halloween witch doll! Take a small small and thin branch / stick from a tree that could form a broom stick for your witch doll. Place the thin stick straight and glue it one the long piece of rectangular felt that you had formed by cutting thin pieces from one side.

Using a glue is crucial so that once you form a beautiful broom, it doesn’t come off easily. Now start wrapping the long rectangular piece over one end of the stick to form the broom. Once it is wrapped, secure it further with a back thread just like in the image above.

Now comes the turn to make your witch’s hairs! The other rectangular piece that we made cutting two sides of it thinly needs to be folded using a glue in the middle to form hairs.

Step4: Sewing the Arms and Hat with the Body

Now its time to attach the arms with a broom on the torso. That too needs to be done using the sewing machine by fixing the arms on both the sides. So, cross the both touching one another on the front of the torso. Moreover, now fix the broom between the arms and the torso using a fabric glue making your witch doll hold it like a pro!

The last but not the least, now attach both the sides of the hat using a sewing machine leaving the bottom open.

Now stitch the hairs on to the head using a hand needle and thread. Once the hairs are intact, now place the hat over the hair to hide the folded felt. Ultimately, you can attach the hat using the same hand needle and thread to secure the hat well by fixing the front and the back nicely.

Your Halloween Witch Doll is Ready to Slay!

Now look at that cutie! Your Halloween witch doll is all ready to slay. You can make as many as you want by this simple method. These can be used as a decorative gift in a candy box for children. Or, you can decorate your feast table by attaching it on top of the cup cake stand to make it prominent.
